AMAIA

Jindo/Elkhound mix | female | 3 years old |  50 lbs

My Story

Amaia arrived to a private shelter in South Korea with no name and no story, and was initially avoidant, nervous, and totally disengaged with the volunteers who would interact with her. With time she started to get accustomed to the new environment and staff, and had a breakthrough while getting brushed for the first time and relishing that experience!

My Personality

Amaia has blossomed into a dog that LOVES people. She’s friendly with the volunteers regardless of gender. She is interested in other dogs but mostly ignores them after an initial greeting of sniffing each other. She is a large and powerful dog and will need more leash training. Because she is coming from a shelter environment, her adopters will need to be patient and help her acclimate to life in a home!

The ideal family for Amaia is one that can be patient and commit to training him so she can continue to build confidence and enjoy life to the fullest!

Notes from the foster:

“💫 Great WFH buddy: “When I work from home and can watch her she mostly lays around nearby, occasionally zoomies and plays with toys and I pet her. But she doesn’t really demand a lot of attention.”

💫 Non-destructive: she loves her toys and will focus on those rather than chewing on furniture or personal items.

💫 Affectionate: this trait is rare for the breed. She’s learned to ask for scratchies and pets (fosters very happily give in) and will cuddle up next to you (when she wants to 😉) on the couch!

💫 Amaia is crate-trained but the fosters note that she is completely fine given free roam of the house alone. Just be mindful that she is VERY scrappy and knows where the treats are kept 😆.

Our ideal adopter for her is still someone with strong dog experience or someone willing to commit to a training program for her. She has resource-guarding tendencies that are manageable but need to be mindful of around other dogs. She’s a great companion dog to stay at home with but equally ready to go on adventures with you at any given moment! “
