GUREUM

Poodle | neutered male | 3 years old | 15 lbs

My Story

Gureum is a rescue from Jeju Island, South Korea. Due to increased cost of transport, adoption donation is a minimum of $525 for dogs from Jeju Island.

He was pulled from the only shelter on Jeju island and it is a high kill shelter that gives only 10 days to live. A volunteer at the shelter thought Gureum was too cute and poor to die in the shelter so the volunteer placed him with little puppies so he can stay longer. Then the rescue team found Gureum and heard the story and decided to take him out.

My Personality

Gureum is a shy and independent dog. He loves to be with people and follow you everywhere and is not hesitant to show how much he likes you. He feels most comfortable alone without other animals. He is not aggressive to other animals, and he just does not join with other dogs. He enjoys his time alone just with human friends.

He also has separation anxiety, which is on training and has improved so much from the beginning of the foster, but still needs some time to work on this. More details on Gureum’s separation anxiety below.

Commands learned: COME, SIT, UP, LEAVE IT

SOCIALIZATION QUICK FACTS

Comments:  Children should be over the age of 10.

Resource guarding with other dogs - Snacks and toys. He only growls and doesn’t attack other dogs.

Prefers to be the only dog.

Not tested with cats.

DAILY ROUTINE QUICK FACTS

Comments:  He has separation anxiety and used to bark and howl when he was alone. However, after separation anxiety training and after he has settled down in the foster, he doesn’t bark or make noise any more. He just jumps up and down in anxiety but he stops it when he knows you are really not there anymore.

Potty trained both indoors and outdoors but he prefers going outdoors.

More details of Gureum’s separation anxiety:

Gureum’s separation anxiety is not the worst case possible, but I know to the very little details of his anxiety so maybe this description can help the adopter/foster to continue work on his training.

Gureum feels jealous over other dogs and other things that distract him being near to people. For example, if the foster pets or hugs another dog, he feels jealous. When he gets jealous he purposely makes marking mistakes. He would pee on a few sites in the home. However, the foster is always full of dogs and if Gureum goes to a house where he will be alone with no other dog, this can change very much. Gureum only pees, never makes stools indoor. He’s outdoor potty trained and he knows that but he purposely makes mistakes so he can take your eyes on him from other distractions.

For the first few weeks at the foster, Gureum barked and howled when he was left alone. Now since he settled down and after some training (still ongoing) he does not bark and howl any more when left alone. He would jump up and down until he feels completely sure that no one is there anymore.

During night, the foster puts a diaper on him in case he makes any mistake and Gureum seems to be very familiar with wearing diapers. He doesn’t get stressed from wearing them.
